OMMA Magazine Voted Firstborn as Best Web Design Firm in 2010

In 2010, Firstborn won the Best Web Design Firm. They won, mainly, for their work on the Mustang Customization site. Their fully designed animated sites were their selling point. One quote from the article that was really rememberable was that they thought about the customers, not themselves and the clients. They created their websites for the viewer and customer, put themselves in their shoes to make what they’d want to see.

JoonYong Park is the Senior Art Director at Firstborn. He joined the team in 2004. He oversees the teams advertising, and the diversity of their portfolio. Some of his current works he has helped with is the Sobe site that imprints tattoos on the reader of the page. The site is very interesting, and well done, it maps the tattoos perfectly to the angles of the face or body part. Ad Age did a piece on him that told 6 things we did not know about him. One of which was that he cannot be left alone, he was left alone once and sold his parents tv and refrigerator in a garage sale. Also an interesting this is the fact that he got around joining the military by becoming a computer programmer in South Korea. The little things we find out about him, make him more personable and someone we can relate with. 

Firstborn Ad agency is one of the best advertising agencies according to Advertising Age. They are number 8 on the list. Ad Age has them as one of the top because of their dependability and creativity with their customers. Ad Age talks about the small size of the company, only around 51 workers, to their 13% increase in revenue over a year. The company is very profitable with their customers, making them keep returning time and time again. One of their main customers talked about in the article is Aflac and the changes they made to the old advertising for the insurance company. All in all, many companies are very happy to have their advertising done by this firm because of their success.

Uniqlo hired Firstborn to create a multimedia short film to show their over running of the popular social site, Pinterest. Uniqlo wanted to show their Dry Mesh T-shirts and decided Pinterest was the perfect media to do it. They had many employees pinning different pins creating a unique look of their shirts. The video shows many of their creations and how they look when scrolling. Firstborn seamlessly put together the clips and made it interesting to watch. They made it where it pushed interest to go look at Uniqlo’s Pinterest board to see what they look like. Which makes this a successful video. Redken Journal is an app that Firstborn designed for students, and teachers, to draw and teach how to do new hair styles. On the app you may draw the hairstyle on a set of faces in different perspectives (Front, sides, back, etc.) This app was created in 2012 for the Redken classes. It allowed the students to use it to experiment new hairstyles with more accuracy. The app is clean and sleek, nothing is there that does not need to be. Firstborn created this app to have everything they needed, from creating the faces to be the same each time to adding the aspect to add care techniques to the drawing, like blowdrying and combing a certain way. You can add notes to the page to remember certain things. This app was well needed for the students and the teacher to do their work more productively. Under Armour, I Will Campaign

One of my favorite campaigns I have found that Firstborn has been the created of is Under Armour’s I Will campaign. Though, to be honest I’m a huge fan of Under Armour anyways so the ad campaign is interesting to me. This site is well designed. The main purpose of the site, the I Will slogan and pledge. It tells about the pledge, and the fact that you can win UA gear if you share your I will story. Firstborn has the page designed so that the most viewed and shared entries are at the top. These stories, if I get the gist right, are the ones most likely to win. There is the featured story that is the most voted, they made this photo bigger so more people would view it and start there at the top of the list. I like the way this site is designed, it fits the purpose of the website really well. The site does not let down the UA name or the Firstborn name.

Dolf Ball

Interestingly enough, firstborn does more than ads. They have also created a few apps for download. One app is a air hokey like game. They named it after their senior developer. I find this interesting be because not all advertising companies find the need to do anything that is not ad based. This app is not for a certain company to advertise them, like their starburst app is, this app is simply for fun. Even fun with your pet cat, as they found the enjoyment in using a cat as a test subject for the game.

Firstborn’s most seen work, as of now, is their MTN Dew portraits. I know I’ve seen them all over the television and internet in the last few weeks. The firm has found a way to make the television commercials flow with the online website. This allows a viewer to flow seamlessly from the television to the website. They have added man “easter eggs” within the portraits for the viewer to learn more about the famous person in the ad. For example, they have an easter egg on Danny Davis’s guitar. It brings up a window that tells of how Danny uses his music to bring peace. These little pop ups help us find out more about the person, which is something we would not be able to do as easily if they were not there. 

Firstborn is a design firm based in New York City. They were founded in and launched their website in 1997. One of the firm’s first clients was Calvin Klein in 1998. The project was a CD-ROM with their fall runway show on it. This was the type of straightforward design worth they wanted to do. They didn’t want to be part of the current design hypes of that time. Over the years they’ve done projects for companies such as Dell, L’Oreal. They expanded their offices during their fifth year of working; this expansion brought on many new clients, along with more projects from their now steady clients. After more expanding and growing they opened a “sister” office in Hollywood to help take on more clients. Between 2009 and 2010 they wont 125 different awards for their work with their clients in the two years. Firstborns clients list is not extensive after all the years of hard work. In their newest online ads for MTN Dew they had to work to extend the TV ad to that online. They added multiple “Easter eggs” within the scrolling portraits for viewers the learn more about the athletes present. I find their use of hidden items to navigate further into the website is very interesting, not many ad agencies would hide things like that in their ads. Firstborn seems to, as far as I have seen, want the viewers of their ads to interact with them, to make it a more in-depth ad, something you just don’t look at and forget. I will enjoy looking deeper into this company as the semester progresses.
